Eastern Shore Vet Hospital

WHO WE ARE:

Eastern Shore Veterinary Hospital , also known as ESVH, is the “sister” clinic to our Dartmouth location. This hospital was started in 1979 by Drs. Ian McKay and Jack Cameron to provide quality veterinary service to the animals of the eastern shore region. The clinic was a separate building until 1988, when it was moved into the Lakeview Shopping Centre. Due to the continued growth of the practice, the facilities were expanded in 2002 to the current status.

The ESVH is staffed by 3 veterinarians (Drs. Francis Minty, Shelagh Cantley & Janet Harrison), our animal health technician/office manager Kim MacAskill, 2 receptionists (Angela Pinham & Susan Corkum), a part-time animal health technician (Leanne Currie) and 2 veterinary assistants (Aundrea Smith & Peggy Corkum). We often have veterinarians and other staff from the Dartmouth Veterinary Hospital when needed. You will also meet our 2 clinic cats, Daisy and Oscar, when you visit. Daisy likes to greet our patients when they arrive and Oscar manages the back area.

We also provide veterinary care to injured wildlife and will examine/treat any wild animal or bird that is brought in to the ESVH. The injured wildlife are then transferred to the Hope for Wildlife Centre in Seaforth for further rehabilitation and eventual release.

Although a smaller facility, we offer complete services in veterinary medicine and maintain a continuous commitment to providing the best quality of care. We strive to maintain high standards with ongoing continuing education through conferences, veterinary/technician journals and from a veterinary website called veterinary information network. This website has up to date treatment standards and access to specialists in all areas of veterinary medicine. Our hospital boasts an intimate and comfortable setting with a warm and inviting staff. Your pets are guaranteed the best of care.

EXAMINATION

We maintain two examination rooms at our hospital. All veterinarians in our practice have a standard examination procedure that covers all areas of your pet's anatomy where possible.

LABORATORY

With the equipment in our hospital, our highly trained doctors and technicians are able to carry out a number of diagnostic tests, including complete blood chemistries, urinalysis, complete white blood counts, fecal examinations, serological testing for heartworm, feline leukemia and immunodeficiency viruses. We use the diagnostic laboratories at the Atlantic Veterinary College , as well as many other outside laboratories for many other procedures, sending these samples by courier and receiving results by e-mail or fax. We are also able to perform electrocardiograms and then transmit the information to a board of veterinary cardiologists for analysis. We receive a complete cardiology report on the patient via fax or a phone call, if the case is urgent.

RADIOLOGY
We have a complete radiology room and produce high quality images used in the diagnostic process.

Our Staff are trained in radiology safety and proper handling of our patients during procedures.

DENTISTRY
Veterinary dentistry is an area where rapid change has taken place over the last few years. We are able to do complete dental prophylaxis, including proper cleaning with an ultrasonic unit, probing, polishing, fluoride treatment, complete charting and dental extractions when necessary.

ANESTHESIA AND SURGERY
Surgery is an integral part of our practice and is performed under aseptic conditions. Modern anaesthetic equipment including Isoflurane gas, along with pre-surgical physical and laboratory examination of our patients and careful electronic monitoring ( pulse oximetry, blood pressure) during surgery allow for the safest and most comfortable anaesthesia possible. Nursing care is a high priority, and we pride ourselves on our commitment to analgesia (pain control) , which all patients receive post-surgically.
